Dry Eye Treatment

Everyone experiences dry eye differently because there are several different underlying causes.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Redness or eyes that appear irritated and bloodshot
  • Consistent burning or tingling sensations in the eyes
  • Eyes that feel itchy or as if they have something in them
  • Increased sensitivity to bright lights or sunlight
  • Excessive tearing, or eyes that always appear watery

We now know that Dry Eye Disease is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that can cause symptoms of discomfort, and visual disturbance, and can lead to damage to the eye. Dry eye treatments start with a full evaluation and diagnosis, and your doctor will work with you to create a targeted treatment plan based on the underlying cause and your specific lifestyle.

Treatment usually starts with artificial tear eye drops, eyelid hygiene routine, and warm compresses. We offer additional treatments including punctal plugs to keep your tears in your eyes longer, prescription medications, and in-office procedures to open your tear glands.

In 2022 and 2023, there have been numerous recalls of over-the-counter lubricating eyedrops which have caused severe infections. Our doctors are warning patients to avoid generic eyedrops that are linked to these infections. Stick with brand name drops where the manufacturing process is verified. We recommend Refresh, Systane, Optase, and Retaine as safe options.
